At the weekend I enjoyed three days of relaxation and entertainment at Silverstone in Northamptonshire. The British Grand Prix is a huge Worldwide event with over 300,000 people attending the circuit across the three days.

Lewis Hamilton qualified on pole position and when the race started he led strongly from the front. Everything looked set for a perfect race for Lewis and a win in front of his home crowd.

But then it all went wrong. His driving was excellent, his engineers had worked hard to prepare the car for the circuit but no one could predict that the tyres would start to fail. Lewis was the first victim (of at least 4) who experienced tyre disintegration during the race. This caused him to move from first place to last place in less than a lap.

So what do you do when your plan is all coming together and something completely unexpected happens?

Well, Lewis and his team reworked the strategy. They managed the variables they had control over and that, together with sheer determination on the part of Lewis, enabled them to end up in fourth place at the end of the race.

What an achievement! The easy option was to just accept the situation, but the team were focused enough to pull success out of failure.

This is such a positive example of how belief in what you can achieve, faith in the abilities of your fellow team members and a good dose of stubborness can produce unbelievable results.
